Wild Ungulate Surveys in Grassland Habitats:

چکیده

Surveying grassland ungulates presents unique problems to the researcher. Appropriate statistical methods exist, but applying them in the field invariably requires ingenuity and compromise. I describe line-transect surveys I conducted of 3 plateau grassland species in Qinghai province, focusing on underlying statistical assumptions and specific measures I took to deal with each. I also suggest that authors take care to consider assumptions of whatever statistical model is chosen, and provide sufficient detail in reports that readers may assess strong and weak points of the survey. Oldest Evidence of Toolmaking Hominins in a Grassland-Dominated Ecosystem

BACKGROUND Major biological and cultural innovations in late Pliocene hominin evolution are frequently linked to the spread or fluctuating presence of C(4) grass in African ecosystems. Whereas the deep sea record of global climatic change provides indirect evidence for an increase in C(4) vegetation with a shift towards a cooler, drier and more variable global climatic regime beginning approxim...

Resource-ratio theory applied to large herbivores.

The theoretical description of exploitation competition, known as resource competition theory (RCT) or resource-ratio theory, has been tested in terrestrial plant communities and microorganisms in laboratory cultures. Applications in animal ecology have been rare, although the theory itself is generic. A major difficulty is that the description of resources in RCT is fundamentally different fro...

Vertebrate predators have minimal cascading effects on plant production or seed predation in an intact grassland ecosystem.

The strength of trophic cascades in terrestrial habitats has been the subject of considerable interest and debate. We conducted an 8-year experiment to determine how exclusion of vertebrate predators, ungulates alone (to control for ungulate exclusion from predator exclusion plots) or none of these animals influenced how strongly a three-species assemblage of rodent consumers affected plant pro...

Distribution and Extinction of Ungulates during the Holocene of the Southern Levant

BACKGROUND The southern Levant (Israel, Palestinian Authority and Jordan) has been continuously and extensively populated by succeeding phases of human cultures for the past 15,000 years. The long human impact on the ancient landscape has had great ecological consequences, and has caused continuous and accelerating damage to the natural environment. The rich zooarchaeological data gathered at t...

Habitat Associations of Migrating and Overwintering Grassland Birds in Southern Texas

We report on the habitat associations of 21 species of grassland birds overwintering in or migrating through southern Texas, during 1991-1992 and 1992-1993. Ninety percent of our grassland bird observations were made during winter and spring, and only 10% occurred during fall. Grassland species made up a high proportion of the total bird densities in grassland and shrub-grassland habitats, but ...
